Get growing for this year's Flower Show!
Get in trim for the 2019 Flower Show!
Hard on the heels of the cricket world cup celebrations comes the Binfield Heath Flower Show’s first ever single wicket competition! Come prepared for some fun thwacking willow on leather – and after that you can have a go at throwing ladder beanbags, beating the goalie and chicken throwing.
Saturday August 24 sees the 71st village show, featuring a super-active afternoon with new atractions, sideshows, displays, artisan stalls and exhibitions to accompany the traditional flower, craft and produce competitions.
Back by popular request is the exhibition of historical photographs of Binfield Heath and neighbouring areas, presented by photographer Alan Greeley. The South Oxfordshire Archaeological Group will show artefacts and talk about the dig in the woods between Binfield Heath and Harpsden. The British Legion stall will be raising funds again with its stand full of household treasures.
There will be plenty to refresh visitors in the tea tent managed by the Village Society and the beer tent and soft drinks van run this year by the Shoulder of Mutton. A barbeque and ice creams vendor will make for a great lunch.
Children’s entertainment includes sports races, Punch and Judy, face painting and tractor rides with local farm machinery enthusiast, Phil Dyer. Local school children have been busy painting under the theme of Butterflies and Bees and winners of the inter-school art competition, sponsored by Invesco Perpetual, will be on show in the art tent.
For animal lovers there’s a wonderful wildlife element this year. Llamas and Shetland ponies are joined by reptiles and invertebrates including snakes, lizards and tarantulas. Owls and ferrets will be on display and goats, ducklings and guinea pigs can be fed and groomed.
The Companion Dog Show will take place as usual. Other favourites back this year are the BBO Wildlife Trust, Wyfold Riding for the Disabled and the line-up of classic and farm vehicles and motorbikes.
Music will be provided by the Woodley Concert Band.
The show opens at 12 noon on the field opposite Holmwood in Shiplake Row, Binfield Heath RG9 4DP. Admission at the gate costs £4 for adults, with senior citizens and children 6-15 paying £2 and a family ticket costs £10 for 2 adults and 2 children. There is free parking in the field beside the show.
The competition schedule is now up on the Binfield Heath website at www.binfieldheath.org.uk/show and can be downloaded to print out. This year the form can also be filled in and returned on-line.
Entry forms must be received either on-line, or if printed out, in Binfield Heath Village Stores or the Corner Shop, Shiplake by 7pm on Wednesday 21 August. Flower Show enquiries to Evelyn McQuater 07912 619970.
