Bottle and Glass open again
Welcome to the Bottle & Glass Inn!
After an 18-month extensive restoration by the Phillimore Estate, the Bottle & Glass opened its doors again on April 1st.
The grade II listed pub – renamed the Bottle & Glass Inn – has been brought back to life following extensive restoration and extension, sensitively designed to retain the building’s character and charm. Even the engraved glass window pane in the old bar is still there.
The owners come with a wealth of experience in running food-led pubs. David Holliday was the head chef of the Pot Kiln in Berkshire before becoming the general manger of its Michelin-starred sister pub, the Harwood Arms in Fulham, where he met Alex Sergeant.
The B&G is a ‘free house’, championing local beers, including Loddon brewed on the estate. Pub menus will include local produce, direct from farmers where possible, with some exciting fine dining available in the new dining room behind the original pub.
The old bar on the right as you walk in is now a locals’ bar with pews and benches. Villagers having a drink will be able to fortify themselves with snacks – try out the Bottle & Glass scotch egg. Bar snacks will feature at lunch times for locals as well as the walkers and cyclists who frequent the pub.
The pub’s new décor blends traditional with modern. A few of the old bar tables can be recognised, alongside oak and refectory tables and mismatched old chairs. And in a nod to the past, the old pub sign blown down in a recent gale now has a place of honour inside.
Outside, the pub’s trademark thatched ‘mushrooms’ will be gradually restored for the summer, where Alex and David plan to hold barbecues. There is a new dining terrace that connects to the dining room via a length of bi-fold doors.
